Deer know themselves, others, their surroundings, and most importantly they know danger. Sun Tzu says, “Travel where there is no enemy.” Awareness is proper preparation and avoidance of danger. Zanshin is to see into the future. Proper Zanshin helps you both in dangerous situations as well as in success. Prepare by watching the bad people (threats), watching for the good people (allies), look for the exits, best routes, and think through the situations before it happens. Run scenarios for preparation and success.

The Deer can teach us how to successfully walk into new cultures and organizations through organizational awareness, or the ability to understand the politics of the new culture (job, school, country, other people’s families, clubs, classes, or politics). Other organizations can teach you new things to help solve your problems. In order to fill your cup, you must first empty it. First, learn and listen, absorbing others’ values and ideals. Then, ask yourself why people do things differently than me? Respect the teachers and leaders of other places and think about why you have always done it your way. Don’t be quick to change how things are done until you know why they are done that way. Tearing down statues isn’t smart because it makes us forget what they teach us. Ask about the fruit of what that culture or organization creates.

The deer teaches us the importance of being aware of others. It is important to pay attention to the details that people give out. If you are able to listen and watch, people tell you everything about themselves. It takes patience and awareness to learn this. Start by noticing your body language and tone, before moving on to others’ body language and tone. In Karate, this is called Kamae or posture.
